Long Term Care- What are Activities of Daily Living

Long Term Care Planning

What are Activities of Daily Living?

Long-term care is a range of services and supports you may need to meet your personal care needs. Most long-term care is not medical care, but rather assistance with the basic personal tasks of everyday life, sometimes called Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), such as:

  • Bathing

  • Dressing

  • Using the toilet

  • Transferring Moving into and out of a bed, chair, or wheelchair.

  • Caring for incontinence

  • Eating

Activities of daily living (ADLs) have a significant impact on insurance policies. Insurance companies factor ADLs into their risk assessment, which can affect both the cost of premiums and the coverage provided. For example, individuals who are able to perform their own ADLs, such as bathing, dressing, and eating, are considered to be of lower risk, resulting in lower premiums and more comprehensive coverage.

On the other hand, individuals who require assistance with their ADLs may be charged higher premiums or may not be eligible for certain types of coverage.

Furthermore, ADLs are also taken into consideration when determining the amount of coverage available to an individual.
